For thousands of years, nature practiced its form of regenerative land management with few outside influences. Bison and other herbivores grazed on prairies bristling with life above and below the soil. Nature found a way to balance grazing animals, predators, earth, air, and water. The sun's rays were collected and converted to energy by the plants and atmospheric carbon, offering a rich food source for grazing animals. Research has demonstrated that prairie grasses can capture an equivalent amount of carbon to that of trees. The creatures working tirelessly underground may go unnoticed, but they play a crucial role in the mixture. This has been an ongoing process for many generations.
In many parts of the world, desertification, dust bowls, and freshwater scarcity are becoming all too common. Land management becomes a vital component in bringing these areas back. Regenerative farming is an effort to work with nature, not against it. With an eye toward healing the lands and good stewardship, small farms are seeing success with a natural approach.
