Do you know the origins of Memorial Day?
Memorial Day began three years after the end of the Civil War when veteran John Logan established "Decoration Day" on May 30th, 1868. On that date, people on both sides of the war would be encouraged to place flowers on the graves of their relatives, friends, or comrades who fell during the war. Our country was still reeling from the aftermaths of this war. The North and the South were mourning loved ones lost to the 600,000 casualties in the Civil War.
When the first official Decoration Day was held at Arlington National Cemetery, the Grand Army of the Republic placed flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. At that moment, Union vs. Confederate did not matter. What mattered most was remembering those who gave their lives to this war.
Another war led to Decoration Day being known as Memorial Day. After World War I, Decoration Day soon evolved to remember all soldiers who died in conflicts - both on home soil or abroad. In 1968, Memorial Day officially became an American holiday and was declared to be celebrated on a Monday.
How can we honor those brave individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice? We can take this day to step away from the rat race of life and spend time with those closest to us. Give your family and friends a call. Plan to spend this day nurturing relationships that not even money and power could buy.
If you are honoring someone close to you this Memorial Day, our hearts go out to you. 💙
Well Wishes, Team USWM
