Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holiday borne of gratitude. Pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower back in mid-November 1620 were thankful to have survived harsh conditions at sea. Their original plan was to escape persecution and economic struggles back in Europe. They had broken away from the mainstream and as pioneers began to forge their own path. That path took them to America where they settled an area to become known as New England. It was a fresh start and a chance to have freedom they had not known back in Europe. Of course freedom comes with a great deal of responsibility, so while they were thankful for the blessings the new world offered, they were facing an all new set of struggles. Building a colony from scratch comes with hardships in abundance. They learned, they failed, they learned some more. At the end of the first winter, they'd lost over half of their original voyagers. Imagine trying to tame a wild, unforgiving land with a handful of people. It must have been quite an ordeal. Still, they persevered, they made friends with the natives who helped them learn the land, and in the fall of 1621 enjoyed a feast with their new neighbors. This harvest feast was a thankful appreciation for the challenges they had been through to get to that point and everything they had gained from their efforts. They banded together using each individual's strengths and knowledge to overcome as a whole. The pioneering spirit of these folks helped create the foundation for our nation.
Over twenty three years ago, the farmers that came together to start Grassland Beef / US Wellness Meats had steered away from the mainstream. Commercial style farming methods were proven to increase profit, but it introduced unhealthy conditions for animals, more chemicals, GMOs, antibiotics, and growth hormones into the mix. Our farm families decided to side with nature and chose to farm holistically without the caustic additives and harsh treatments. It was a bit of pioneering spirit that led them to where we are today. Even with all of the work, challenges, failures, and learning to get to this point, we are reminded that without YOU, there is no US. On this Thanksgiving we want to say "THANK YOU" to each and every one of our patrons, young and old. Thank YOU for continuing to choose US Wellness Meats as your farm partner. We hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving with family, friends, fellowship, and delicious food!
