With October coming to a close next week, young people are gearing up for Trick or Treating. They're planning what costumes to wear, which neighborhoods to visit, and whether it will be a solo mission or a group affair with friends?
Parents, if your children are going out to collect 5-10 lbs of candy, you know it might be several weeks before they come down from the sugar rush. It might make sense to negotiate some ground rules so everyone survives the sugar fallout.
Here are a few tips we've gotten from parents over the years.
1. Limit the amount of candy kids can eat in a day.
2. Make sure the toothbrushes are used frequently over the next several days.
3. Water, water, water - if they're going to eat junk, they need to be hydrated so it's flushed out of the system as quickly as possible.
4. Consider a trade. If your children collect a trove of treats, offer to trade something 'not so sugary' in exchange for their haul, or even a partial trade. Let them negotiate a fair trade so they aren't gorging on junk candy all week. Be advised though, depending on the haul, you might be faced with some more serious negotiations. It could range from their favorite meal, a movie, or video game time to cash, gold, silver, stocks, bonds, or bitcoin - if they really scored.
