Take 2...
We're nearly nine months into the year. It's a good opportunity to assess our successes and failures before the new year because we still have time to make adjustments. Many noteworthy people throughout history have embraced their failures in order to succeed. Thomas Edison said, "I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work." With the right attitude, failure is an important component of success. So, how are your fitness and diet goals going for the year? If your New Year's Resolutions have fallen by the wayside, never fear, there's still time to turn it around in 2024.
Here are a few ideas to consider for getting back on track.
1. Set your goals - you may have already done this on January 1st. Look back at what you wanted to accomplish, make some adjustments, and settle on where you want to be in a month and at the end of the year.
2. Make a plan - this doesn't have to be complicated. Once you know what what you want to achieve, chart a course for success. If it's Keto, maybe your plan will require limiting your carb intake. If it's Mediterranean or some other diet, maybe you're more concerned with calories. Make sure you include exercise in the equation so you can kick start your metabolism.
3. Keep track - just like a budget for finances, if you don't keep track money can get away from you and leave you wondering where it went. When you keep track of money, diet, and fitness, you know what to expect. It can be a big surprise when we actually start tracking what we've been eating. If you struggle with this, try using a diet app that will help you plan, track, and recommend.
4. Stick to it one day at a time. We hear athletes use this phrase in interviews so much it's become a cliche, but it also has some truth. Don't lose track of today because your worried about tomorrow. Stick to your plan today. Stick to your plan tomorrow and the next day. Pretty soon you're at the end of the month and you've made a new positive routine for yourself. Self discipline is a huge factor in establishing new routines. All the self-help gurus, diet strategies, and fitness coaches accomplish nothing if we can't find the inner discipline inside ourselves to stick to it. As we heard in the classic 1998 movie, The Waterboy — "You can do it!"
