If you enjoy curling up with a good book on a rainy Saturday afternoon or before drifting off at night, you've probably run across some of the timeless classics that pay homage to man's best friend. Many childhood favorites like "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Old Yeller", "The Call of the Wild", "Lassie", or "Because of Winn-Dixie" have fanned the flames of literary appreciation and led to a love of reading from a young age. Just recalling some of these stories brings back so many sentimental memories. If you had the good fortune of growing up with a pet — or even now have a dog at home that looks forward to your company — you know that friendships do indeed cross species boundaries. Sometimes we don't give enough credit to these relationships or the valuable lessons we learn from our furry friends. Many of these classic stories involve loyalty, friendship, and teamwork - traits we want to instill in our children and hope that we have in ourselves.
Throughout history, dogs have served as guardians, night watches, sled pullers, service animals, retrievers, hunters, farm hands, shepherds, food finders, bomb sniffers, drug detectors, lifeguards, search and rescue, and so many more it's impossible to list them all. Not to mention, a best friend who will always forgive, always be loyal, always be there to comfort. It's no secret that dogs provide a certain amount of stress relief and exercise for their people. Fur therapy is a real thing for people of all ages.
Whether you have a hard working farm or service dog, or a companion who is there to greet you when you get home, they need exercise and a healthy diet just like you and me. Dogs have served mankind for thousands of years and the vast majority of that time they've had wild-style diets, eating raw meat and bones. It's only been in the last 100 years or so that processed dog food companies have grown up and created a market for dry, processed kibble. It tends to be cheaper, but lacks species appropriate nutrition. We have an entire Pet Food Category dedicated to dogs and cats. If you're considering transitioning your pet to a healthier, raw food diet, check out our Raw Pet Food and Bones along with a lot of helpful information on our Discover Wellness Blog.
