St. Patrick's Day ushers in spring throughout the land. Some parts are already experiencing warmer temps and more sunshine. Our ancestors dealt with some extreme winters while lacking many of the modern conveniences we enjoy today. Making it to spring after a long winter was always a triumph. Throughout yesteryears, families would have to manage closely their winter food stocks to make sure they had enough to last through to spring when they could look forward to better hunting conditions, fresh produce, and warmer weather. Sickness and hunger were all too common. While we still have to deal with these issues to to a lesser extent, we may have a better understanding of the importance diet serves our wellbeing. Spring is more than a triumph over winter, it's also an opportunity to clean up after winter. Our bodies respond well to the additional sunshine as higher winter melatonin levels begin to drop and we have additional energy to take up these tasks.
Spring cleaning is a popular tradition that has origins dating thousands of years ago. There's of course more to it than tradition, it makes a lot of sense to clear out any remnants of sickness, mold, dust, and anything else lurking in those nooks and crannies. Spring is the perfect time to open up the house and let the fresh air in, deep clean areas that have been avoided for months, and prepare for a new season. It's also a great time for a little personal introspection. Besides inspecting our home, it's not a bad idea to take a closer look at our diet, routines, stress levels, sleep, exercise, and even relationships. It sounds like a lot, but balance is something that always requires attention. If the scales tip a little it can throw everything else off.
