People need companionship. It's programmed into our DNA somehow. We are a social animal, and family and community are two very important aspects of humanity. We aren't the only social animal though. In fact, some are even more social than we are. Think about a bee hive, ant colony, or a herd of bison. They stick together, work together, and protect themselves from predators, primarily by their numbers. Domesticated animals like dogs are also extremely social which is probably why we make such good companions. Archeologists have found evidence of humans and canines living together in communities that date back thousands of years. Anyone who has ever had a dog knows how loyal they are. If you don't believe it, ask a paramedic or police officer who has responded to a fair share of wellness checks on elderly people. Not only are dogs extremely loyal but according to the American Heart Association, they can also be Linked to Reduced Heart Risk. It is thought that the interaction and bond between pets and people help reduce risk factors for heart disease. That seems like a pretty significant benefit to spending some time with Fido. Some of that might come from walks with your furry friend. That additional exercise for Fido is also doing us some good too apparently.
A loyal dog becomes an important part of the family. Their presence not only provides a health benefit to the family, but it also provides a sense of protection. Even small dogs can make good watch dogs, alerting homeowners to danger or serving as a first line of defense. If you're considering a dog as a pet, we recommend studying up on the various breeds and find one that fits into your situation. Puppies are a lot like children. They require a lot of attention, and if left to their own devices, can destroy a lot of stuff in a short time. Make sure you know what you're getting into, be willing to give the attention, exercise time, and nutrition your furry friend deserves and there will be no shortage of mutual love and affection for years to come.
