Do you know who your ancestors were? Do you know where they lived, worked, and played? If not, you may find some interesting details about your own personal health, nutrition, and wellness just by digging deeper into your past. Studies show that there are some distinct variations in diets across the globe that may be inscribed into our DNA. We've all heard the term "hunter-gatherers". This describes the methods our ancestors employed well before modern era of shopping for meats, fruits, and veggies at grocery stores, big box stores, or online. Today, we really don't worry much about what is in season, because it's available somewhere in the world. Modern logistics technologies have made it possible to have whatever we want. Most metropolitan areas and even bigger grocery stores have foods specific to various ethnic and regional diets. Craving a banana, but you live in New York? No problem, your local market has plenty available that arrived on a ship. Do you use olive oil? You won't find olives growing around here, but they come on a ship from the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Depending on where our ancestors lived, the knowledge should give us some real guidance on what our individual body needs or thrives on. If your family came from the Mediterranean area, your preferred diet may be different than if your family arrived here from Ireland, England, or Germany. Different foods are aclimated to different climates, just like people. While meat would have been an important part of any diet due to the value of protein and other vital nutrients, gathering local fruits, berries, and vegetables were also important. Wild game was on the menu and fruits and veggies had far more nutritional value than they do today. There wasn't an "organic" designation, because everything was organic.
Things have changed. Modern reliance on ultra-processed foods, chemicals, food laboratories, and factories have changed our food supply since our great-great-great grandparents were hunting and gathering food. What our ancestors didn't eat might be just as important as what they did. This week at US Wellness Meats, we're celebrating our ancestors with a Sale on over 75 items in our Paleo Favorites category. It's a great time to stock up!
