Dear John,
Santa on Beach
Seems like it is way too early to be thinking about Christmas shopping, but it will be here in exactly six months!  So to celebrate the halfway-to-Christmas holiday, we just decided to have a big sale!  Be sure to stock up on your favorites!  Grass-fed gifts are the best - so if you want to stock up on Christmas presents early, our cryovac packaged products will last in the freezer until Christmas.  Or, we have gift certificates available that are easy to send and spend!

Stock up and save!  Two of our favorite steaks - the Delmonico and Tri-Tip are the featured volume discounts this week, so the more you buy the more you save!   Some of our favorite summer treats are on sale this week - NY Kabobs are perfect on the grill, Hickory Smoked Ribs make a quick summer dinner and don't forget the Chocolate Cashew Cream Ice Cream for dessert!

Looking for diabetes relief?  A new study published by the Molecular Nutrition & Food Research journal shows that cashew tree products may help improve the body's response to insulin.  Researchers studied many different types of plant products, and found that extracts from the cashew seed "likely contains active compounds, which can have potential anti-diabetic properties."  They are hoping that natural cashew products can be used to help alleviate diabetes suffering.  If you need a tasty way to incorporate cashews into your diet try our Organic, Raw Cashews, or any of our Organic, Raw Cashew Cream Ice Creams.  The Chocolate Cashew Cream is one of our best sellers and just happens to be on sale this week!

Crossfit competition begins!  Visit our blog to see how Team Flatirons Fitness fared at the Crossfit Games, and to see photos of the competition.  We would like to thank Flatirons Crossfit for letting us be a part of the Games, and thanks to all of our customers for following along and sending us your thoughts!

Beef JerkyBeef Jerky is back!  Both plain and spicy in sticks or slabs, as well as our extra dry jerky are all back in stock.  Our beef jerky is made from grass-fed beef and loaded with protein and CLA.  It makes the perfect summer snack, and kids love it!

Chili PepperCapsaicin, the stuff that gives chili peppers their kick, may cause weight loss and fight fat buildup by triggering certain beneficial protein changes in the body, according to a new study on the topic. The report, which could lead to new treatments for obesity, appears in ACS' monthly Journal of Proteome Research.

Obesity is a major public health threat worldwide, linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other health problems. Laboratory studies have hinted that capsaicin may help fight obesity by decreasing calorie intake, shrinking fat tissue, and lowering fat levels in the blood. Nobody, however, knows exactly how capsaicin might trigger such beneficial effects.

In an effort to find out, the scientists fed high-fat diets with or without capsaicin to lab rats used to study obesity. The capsaicin-treated rats lost 8 percent of their body weight and showed changes in levels of at least 20 key proteins found in fat. The altered proteins work to break down fats. "These changes provide valuable new molecular insights into the mechanism of the anti-obesity effects of capsaicin," the scientists say.

Changing the Course of ADD/ADHD without Medication

ADD/ADHD is one of the most highly diagnosed conditions in children these days. This condition seems to be one of the fastest growing conditions diagnosed in school-age children. But is it just diagnosed more often or are there other environmental factors contributing to this increase?

The latest research shows another pervasive chemical as being a primary contributor to ADD/ADHD.

PFC's (Polyfluoroalkyl chemicals) are almost a household word due to the fact that they are so pervasive in our environment these days. A new study by Boston University School of Public Health has linked these common chemicals to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Researchers found "increased odds of ADHD in children with higher serum PFC levels." The majority of these children had already been diagnosed with ADHD, one of the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders in children.

PFCs are compounds used in industrial and commercial products like stain-resistant  coatings, food packaging, and fire-fighting foams. In a 2003-2004 study, 2,094 blood samples taken from the U.S. population found more than 98 percent of the sample had detectable serum levels of PFCs, according to the study. Once absorbed into the body, it can take years for some types of PFCs to be partially eliminated.

Numerous scientific studies on animals have suggested exposure to PFCs can have neurotoxic effects, but there was little information, however, on the chemicals' effects on human development. Because PFC's are so heavily incorporated into our environment, it is difficult to completely avoid them. But you can definitely reduce exposure to them by being aware of where they exist....

Sidestep This Invisible Menace That's Making Us Fat

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

Conventional "diet wisdom" has been bad enough. But now there's a new category of chemicals that's building even fatter thighs, butts, and bellies.  I call them "obesogens."

These invisible toxins are getting into your food and making you fat.  Unless you take action, it won't just tip the scales, you could wind up sick and diseased, too.

I'm talking about endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in your food and water.  These chemicals, which have a structure that closely resembles the hormone estrogen, go from your food into your bloodstream, where they send out the "fat command" to the cells in your body.

The bad news is that your body can't tell the difference between these estrogen mimics and the real thing.  As far as your body is concerned, these chemicals that look like estrogen are estrogen.

And whether you're a man or a woman, too much estrogen makes you fat, slow, tired, and diseased.

Obesogens Hijack Your Body's "Fat Signals"

Researchers are starting to speak out. In an article that just hit my desk, a professor from the University of Missouri hit the nail on the head:

"Obesogens are thought to act by hijacking the regulatory systems that control body weight... and any chemical that interferes with body weight is an endocrine disruptor."

What we're seeing is an actual takeover. Your body gets commands from an external source telling it to pack on more fat...

shane ellison THREE ENERGY BUILDING REQUIREMENTS FOR BUSY PROFESSIONALS

By Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison
www.thepeopleschemist.com

Millions of American's suffer from fatigue.  Their energy levels are so low that they require a pot of coffee to crawl out of bed.  When afternoon hits, caffeine rich energy drinks flow freely to keep up at work. By evening, exhaustion sets in and it's straight to bed - only to repeat the lethargic process tomorrow. This isn't how the body was meant to operate.

Massive amounts of energy can be had without the above "fatigue masking" substances.  Once possessed, anything is possible.  Your energy will be the fuel behind your life's most important projects, thoughts, creativity and relationships.  It's what the best athletes and entrepreneurs in the world are made of and to get it, you have to adhere to three energy building requirements.

First, replace carbohydrate consumption with healthy fats three times per day. I'm not talking about heart disease causing trans fats and vegetable oils.  I'm talking about Mother Nature's energy boosting fats like whole eggs, grass fed beef, coconut oil, seeds, nuts and avocados, just to name a few. Unlike carbohydrates, consuming healthy fat does not cause a spike in the fatigue causing, fat storing hormone, insulin.  But even better, it exponentially increases the production of a molecule known as ATP. ATP is the master energy and strength producing molecule within the body. The more you have, the better you perform.

A single fat molecule can produce a whopping 129 molecules of ATP. In contrast, if you are not consuming enough healthy fat the body is forced to utilize an inferior source of ATP production - carbohydrates. A single carbohydrate molecule produces a paltry 38 molecules of ATP! Do the math - fat yields more than three times the energy as a carbohydrate!

Second, begin supplementing with 0.5 to 3.0 grams of acetyl-L-carnitine (ACLAR) daily.  This essential molecule acts as a chaperone to fat.  It works by carrying it to our energy furnace - the mitochondria. Without ALCAR, fat remains stored - usually in the belly - and you grow tired.

The Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics recently highlighted the effectiveness of ALCAR among the elderly.  They showed that ALCAR was successful at boosting both mental and physical energy. About 100 participants over the age of 70 showed drastic increases in mental capacity and exercise duration as a result of ALCAR.

Finally, replace sugary energy drinks with water, green tea or yerba mate. Each one of these health drinks mobilizes fat into the bloodstream to ensure energy production.  Green tea and yerba mate can also boost mood and serve as a great pre and post exercise drink.

As these requirements become habit, expect a life filled with sustained energy.  Say goodbye to the highs and lows associated with the use of fatigue masking substances.  Say goodbye to the sustained energy that fuels mediocrity.  And regardless of your age, say hello to a new found energy that will fuel success in all areas of your life.

Dear Dr. Serrano,

I have read the article on B vitamins.  How do you feel about the recent findings regarding folic acid supplements adding a cancer risk?  I have a history of breast and colon cancer.

Thank you for your input. I enjoy reading the US Wellness newsletter.

Dear Janie,

I disagree with them, they publish data without looking at real life scenarios. Yes, there are differences between folate and the real life bio-identical folate, but they don't mention a word in the article.

The drug companies have products in the market named Deplin and MetanX and Cerefolin, all containing real folate.  The research for these "drugs" is incredible, but because they put a patent on the delivery system and treatment combination and in real life they are vitamins, the drug company is not advertising much because the parent company wants to keep it under the radar.

The benefits are outstanding, and the indications are Alzheimers, depression and memory, and they do work.  Just do an internet search to find the answers to your questions, although I am going to give you one now.  The folate in the study is fake, although they do work occasionally you must take higher dosages than when you take the real natural bio-identical vitamin.

If I were you Janie I would take Innate Multifood IV, with all natural sources and bio-identical vitamins without concerns about side effects and not taking the real thing for real benefits.  If you want to check it out go to www.innateresponse.com or call (800) 634-6342 and use code SER030 to get a discount.

Need A Training Lift?
By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

My husband and I have tried nearly everything to improve our bodies during the last few years.  Before becoming more health conscious we were both fat and sluggish!  We have made great progress with simple tactics, but what do we need to do to take it to the next level?  I am talking about being in a bathing suit and looking great, and having all day energy and living life to the fullest!

9 Habits Crucial For Rapid Fat Loss Success
Kate,

Great question Kate, I am going to address this with the top ten traits of the most successful clients that I have the pleasure of working with over the last ten years.  The mindsets of those who make the fastest and most significantly lasting progress are very similar in a majority of cases so they are not just lucky! There is always method to the madness.

Sprint to the Finish Line
Set goals that are well defined, measureable and time sensitive.  Short, yet intense periods of say 12 weeks are far more effective than a 36 week lower level of focus and effort (and compliance) time frame.  Achieve your goals at an aggressive pace and move on to other objectives before you get bored!  Rotating the emphasis of training and nutrition is very important for preventing metabolic and hormonal staleness often associated with extended fat loss efforts.  Have you ever met the person who has been on a "diet" at least as they define it for nearly their entire lives and are still failing miserably?

I am well known for my preference of intensity over "going through the motions" quantity.  I think any effort to improve the physique or performance should be handled with the same mind set of quality over quantity.  Just take a look at the cardio section of any major gym in this country.  For the most part you will see the same people struggling to lose body fat , taking a walk to nowhere on the treadmill when you visit 3 months later.  Why do they choose this venue of exercise?  Little concentration is needed and they can watch the TV without the discomfort of embracing new techniques.  Without the right changes they will continue to go nowhere with progress fast!

Execute the Right Nutrition Plan

Eating the right foods including grass fed beef and other organic choices is a huge step in the right direction, however there must be a plan to address amounts of food, timing, cycling and macronutrient cycling to ensure both rapid and lasting success.  Instead of pulling your hair out trying to figure out the optimal path- get professional help to fast track your success. We have reviewed thousands of diets and it is very rare to find an individual who can properly plan a program for their own needs.  Just like training, the nutrition plan must change frequently to avoid metabolic staleness.  Did you know that increasing good dietary fat sources one day per week can significantly elevate fat burning enzymes and other fat burning mechanisms?  How would you like to have several sizzling grass fed steaks and other tasty food choices all in an effort of fat burning?

Get In and Get Out
In regards to your cardio vascular and weight training opportunities- perform at a hurried pace with a high level of focus and you will not only promote quick changes, but also surge  mental energy levels throughout the day.  Many of my clients have started off with 10 minute exercise sessions and have seen great progress.  Anyone on this earth can find 10 minutes to exercise if they have even an ounce of ambition to improve.  Even your nutrition plan should have a no nonsense approach that is simple to execute and adaptable to ever changing circumstances...
