Dear John,
March is flying by! We are finally enjoying some warmer weather in Northeast Missouri and ready for more spring sunshine!
US Wellness Meats was proud to be featured in the Leisure Section of FoxNews this week, visit their site to read the article!
Here is some scary pork news: a drug known as ractopamine (aka paylean or optaflexx) is banned in 160 countries but has recently been approved by the FDA. Ractopamine is used in 45% of US pork production to increase muscle mass. What is even worse is that most drugs require a clearance period a certain amount of time before slaughter but producers are using this drug as close to slaughter as possible since that is when it is most effective. It appears corporate lobbying is the reason this drug is even allowed in this country. What can you do? Contact your Senators - S. 510 (Food Safety Modernization Act) is set to be voted on by the Senate any day now, let them know about these problems and how amending the bill would help. The best way to avoid contamination is to continue to support small, local farmers and know where your food is coming from.
Rest assured, our pork products are not fed any growth hormones, antibiotics or other additives such as ractopamine. We are very proud to be able to offer Compassionate Certified Pork. Our pigs are outdoors every day, never allowed on slatted floors, have fresh bedding available at all times and live on a complete vegetarian diet.
Are you looking for a source of raw dairy products? Look no further. We have a full selection of raw, grass-fed cheese that are absolutely delicious. With flavors such as colby, gouda, jalapeno, mild cheddar and many more - they are perfect grated and served over salads and casseroles and just as good eaten alone. We also offer four flavors of raw, grass-fed goat cheese which most lactose-intolerant individuals are able to digest.
Don't forget about the Fresh Chilled Meat deadline this Friday, March 26. Be sure to have your Fresh Chilled Meat order in by 12:00 noon CST on Friday to ensure shipment on Wednesday, March 31, versus the next shipping date of April 28. With grilling season upon us, now is a great time to try the Fresh Chilled Steak package as it is the feature sale item this week!
Congrats to US Wellness staff members Megan and Jennifer who ran in the St. Patrick's Day 5K road race in neighboring Kirksville, MO last week. Their race day fuel? Lunch was 75% Lean Patties topped with raw cheese, served up in the US Wellness kitchen!
Best Spring Regards,
John, LeeAnn, Megan, Tressa, and Jennifer on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

NEW STUDY POINTS TO OMEGA-3 BOOSTING BRAIN FUNCTION IN BOYS
Supplements of the omega 3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) may alter the function of the brain associated with working memory, according to results of a new study done recently with healthy boys.
Scientists from the University of Cincinnati showed for the first time using neuro-imaging, that supplementation with DHA has a positive effect on the functional activity in cortical attention networks in humans. In other words, DHA from omega 3 is vital for improved attention.
Omega 3 fatty acids contain both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plus eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA is required in high levels in the brain as a physiologically-essential nutrient to provide for optimal brain function (learning ability, mental development, and behavior) in young and old alike. In addition, DHA plus EPA are both considered to have beneficial effects in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease plus associated risk factors as well as other chronic disorders.
DHA plus EPA are absent from plant food sources rich in ALA (such as flax, canola oil, and walnuts). Since the metabolic conversion of ALA to DHA/EPA (combined) by metabolism is very limited in humans, the most direct way of providing DHA plus EPA for the body is via their direct consumption of foods such as grass fed meats and wild caught fatty fishes.
While there is a growing body of evidence linking DHA to cognitive function, the study noted that it is unknown how DHA supplementation may affect functional cortical activity in humans. In order to fill this knowledge gap, they recruited 33 healthy boys ages 8 to 10 years old, and randomly assigned them to receive one of two doses of DHA (400 or 1200 mg per day) or placebo for eight weeks.
Brain activation patterns were measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a test of sustained attention (playing video games). The results showed that DHA levels in the membrane of red blood cells (erythrocytes) increased by 47 and 70 per cent in the lower and higher dose DHA group, while the placebo groups experienced an 11 per cent drop in DHA levels.
The primary finding from the data was an indication of significant increases in the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex part of the brain in the DHA groups - an area of the brain associated with working memory. Changes in other parts of the brain, including the occipital cortex (the visual processing center) and the cerebellar cortex (plays a role in motor control) were observed.
"These findings suggest that this paradigm could be useful for elucidating neurobiological mechanisms underlying deficits in cortical activity in psychiatric disorders associated with DHA deficiencies, including ADHD and major depression," wrote the researchers.

Raw Milk or Pasteurized?
Milk is often portrayed as healthy, wholesome and wonderful for your bones, your body, your health-but the sad truth is, that white stuff we buy in cartons from the grocery store is not so healthy and wholesome as we might think.
Commercially processed milk often contains hormones, antibiotics, and white blood cells (left over from udder infections) which are then heated (pasteurized) to the point that most of the vital enzymes and nutrients are killed. The milk proteins are then so distorted from the heat, that it becomes hard to digest and quite often causes digestive difficulties and allergic reactions.
That pasteurized, processed stuff we buy in the store really isn't much more than a white, fattening liquid.
Although dairy products get a lot of hype about being healthy, there are a few problems with commercial, homogenized, pasteurized dairy as we know it. Virtually all of the milk and dairy products sold in stores in the US have been pasteurized and homogenized; altering this rich, nutritious product into a not-so-great white liquid.
Studies actually show evidence that commercial, pasteurized milk may play a role in a variety of health problems, including: digestive problems, intestinal irritation, anemia, allergy and sinus problems, and salmonella. Some research shows a connection with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, anemia, MS, leukemia and ovarian cancer, as well.
Did you know that fifty years ago, a typical dairy cow produced around 2,000 pounds of milk per year? Today many dairy cows can produce close to 50,000 pounds! How can this be? It is most certainly NOT natural! These poor animals are forced to lactate year round, through the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, forced feeding plans, and specialized breeding--that's how.
Most dairy cows are now fed Bovine Growth Hormone to increase milk production. Did you know that many countries have actually banned BGH because of safety concerns? For good reason! Any substance added to a dairy cow's body comes out in the milk. I don't know how you feel, but I don't want to experiment with the ingestion of a growth hormone made for dairy cows...

Atkins Without Beef... What's Next?
By: Al Sears, MD
Dear Readers,
Have you heard about this "Eco-Atkins Diet" that a bunch of researchers dreamed up to please vegetarians?
Dr. Atkins must be rolling over in his grave.
These veggie-wackos want a diet that offers "Atkins without animal fat." They call it, "Eco-Atkins." Holy cow!
The Atkins Diet is all about eating animal protein. So how do you eat a high-protein diet without animal fat? Turns out we're supposed to bulk up on soy burgers and wake up to the smell of vegetarian bacon - whatever that is!
Don't be deceived. This crazy veggie-plan is in no way eco-friendly, sustainable, or healthier. The diet is based on multiple allergens such as soy, gluten, and dairy. They use processed foods like veggie bacon, deli slices, and breakfast links.
What's worse: · Up to 30 times the maximum level allowed for a toxic chemical called melamine has been found in soy products. Melamine is a hazardous air pollutant that affects the brain. It's banned from organic food, yet it's finding its way into soy. · Commercial soy farmers in South America are taking over and driving peasant farmers off their land. · Soy is grown on stripped and deforested lands in the Amazon rainforest. · Inferior and contaminated soy is quietly being imported from China.
This concept is disconnected from our past, and it screams of ignorance.
For millions of years, our ancestors were part of an ecological system that had a perfect balance in nature. They relied on fresh-caught meat and food gathered from the ground, bushes, and trees. Their diet was high-protein, high-fat, and low-carbohydrate. Diseases of modern day were non-existent.
Vegetarians want to replace this with processed, low-fat starch products that can ruin your health.
The study they've based their conclusions on has nothing to do with Atkins' diet plan. Atkins' diet is based on beef. In the study, one group ate a vegetarian diet, and the other a vegan diet. The diets are hard to follow for most people, and the products aren't readily available. But what's more important, vital nutrients are missing...

Toxic Gender Bender Approved for Widespread UseBy: Shane "The Peoples Chemist" Ellison www.ThePeoplesChemist.com
I'm no health saint. Every now and then I do something really dumb. It's rare, but I've been known to drink too much wine or beer and even indulge in the occasional cigar. All of these are toxic and as a rogue chemist turned consumer health advocate, I'm not proud of it. But it's my choice. And that's the point. Exposing yourself to toxins should be a choice. But modern day society rarely allows this. Many people are unknowingly poisoning themselves with man-made industrial toxins. The gender bender known as triclosan serves as a poignant example - and it makes my toxic indulgences seem as harmless as apple juice. Triclosan is used in a nauseating array of household products such as toothpastes, soaps and lotions. Synthesized over 30 years ago, it was once thought to be a safe and effective antibiotic. But a recent UC Davis study shows otherwise. Scientists discovered that triclosan accumulates in the body - even when applied topically - to eventually disrupt hormone activity. Once absorbed, the synthetic toxin throws our thyroid and sex hormones out of whack, potentially leading to obesity, infertility, cancer and age acceleration. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently discovered that a ghastly 75% of random people tested were positive for triclosan! There appears to be laws that protect us from such toxic exposure. Appearances can be deceiving. In 1974, Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act. It requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine safe levels of toxins in drinking water and over the counter products like toothpastes and soaps. These levels are called Maximum Contaminant Level Goals (MCLG). These are merely goals, not laws. That's why the gender bending triclosan was recently approved by the EPA for use in over 140 household products. There is simply no law that requires its removal, despite the real and present danger. The best way to avoid triclosan and many other toxins is to choose organic. Natural soaps and the antibiotic zinc oxide work as good as triclosan at beating infection. Most importantly, neither of them will poison you. And whether you're poisoning yourself voluntarily or unknowingly, the best way to protect the body from toxins is by boosting glutathione within the cells - this biological cleaning agent escorts foreign molecules out of the body and into the toilet. This is best achieved by consuming cruciferous vegetables, whey isolate and alpha-lipoic acid. Dr. Serrano,
I have 2 questions. First, you said to take a multi-vitamin - will a B-complex vitamin source (Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw B-Complex) do the same thing? Second, what are you talking about when you said "Use a good fat supplement like alpha omega-3 which has CLA, GLA, fish oils, and olive oil as a loading fat day."? Is there one day of the week when you're supposed to load up on healthy fats?
Thanks, J.C. ______________________________________________
Dear J.C.,
I have worked with a lot of companies and many of them want me to work for them but they want me to say that they have the best vitamins. I honestly can't do that. But I can make recommendations based on clinical experience and three of the best companies I have had experiences with are:
1. Innate Response - check Multi Food IV 2. Standard process - check Catalyn 3. Beverly International - check Ultra 4
Garden of Life is not a bad company, I just haven't worked with them much. I have had great success with the companies above, depending on the condition and what I need to do.
Alpha omega-3 is a product that I tested for three years before I put it on the market. I used different dosages and combinations of oils before I decided to put in the market. It is a combination of GLA (gamma linoleic acid), CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), Oleic acid (from olive oil) alpha linolenic acid (from flax seed oil), and finally fish oils, so it has omega 9, 6, 3 which all of us need.
I created it with the intentions of providing fats for fat loading for athletes for performance, and for health on active people. Yes, I use fat loading days for athletes and also for weight loss.
Thank You,
Dr. Serrano

Need A Training Lift? By: Scott Mendelson
Scott,
What can I do to get rid of my flabby arms and some of the extra on my backside, which drive me nuts since overall I do not have a lot of body fat. I want to look like these Hollywood ladies that have it all. I am also looking for a quick action diet, as I cannot be consistent unless I see quick results.
Sharron
______________________________________ Sharron,
I have been presented with this challenge many times over the last 10 years and fortunately for you I have solutions! Yes, reducing overall body fat levels will help with trouble spots, but weight training is also an important key that many women overlook. Take the cases of two women with the same body weight, the one with more lean muscle will have a lower body fat percentage 100% of the time while having a much leaner appearance. The back side in particular takes on a firmer appearance when trained with weights vs. endless steady state cardio, which can cause muscle wasting. The arms and other body parts also look better with increased muscle definition which is vital for several reasons that may not be obvious.
Toned?
Toned takes on several definitions pending who you ask, but in my world it means improving appearance of an area. One of the elements is increasing the amount of muscle; this phrase seems to scare some people, especially women who think they are at risk of looking like bodybuilders. This is not a realistic problem as 99% of women do not have the genetic capacity to add huge sums of muscle in a short period of time. I have never had a female client roll out of bed in the morning and look like they should be on the cover of a muscle magazine. On the contrary I have many roll out of the bed, look in the mirror and say "I am in the best shape of my life"
Muscle Burns Calories 24x7
Keep in mind that every pound of muscle burns calories 24x7 while improving appearance with a properly designed program. In many cases people who have been dieting over an extended period of time have lost a considerable amount of muscle which is drastically lowering fat burning capabilities. After losing body fat my clients want to keep it off! The easiest way is to make sure metabolism remains peaked and having adequate lean muscle tissue is crucial for keeping body fat levels low over the long term. All things being equal a 30 minute action packed weight training workout is far better for fat loss than an equivalent amount of cardio. Furthermore, when performed correctlyweight training sessions elevate metabolic rate and fat burning hormones for longer periods of time than other exercise venues.
Hollywood has Caught on Fast
Take a close look at TV and movie actors these days, most if not all are weight training as their primary source of exercise which provides the best bang for their time buck while helping to maintain low body fat levels in a highly competitive arena. How do I know? I work with people in this industry regularly. The starved Twiggy look is out as even the most highly pressured female actresses have figured out that over the long term to keep body fat levels low they must weight train and eat appropriately to keep the pay checks coming in.
Weight Training for Fat Loss
My consultation clients see results very quickly, I agree with you - the quicker the fat melts away the greater motivation levels become. The key is using short rest periods with the right sequence of exercises. There are many different individual factors to consider when designing a routine and the below serves as a great example. Using four exercises in a group allows for certain muscles to rest while others are working at full capacity which is vital so that the intensity level can remain very high. For example after doing a set of Rear Leg Elevated Lunges the muscles involved will be fatigued, but there will be 6 minutes that pass due to the other exercises being performed before doing this exercise again, allowing for adequate recovery time so that a high level of effort can be applied for the second set. Doing low weight loads just so that the rest periods can be short is not productive.
Giant Set Fat Burning Circuit

A1. Rear Leg Elevated Lunge 3-4 6-8 3-2-1-0 30 A2. Cable Pull Through 3-4 4-6 3-1-1-1 30 A3. Dynamic Lunge 3-4 6-8 3-1-x-0 30 A4. Prone Machine Hamstring Curls 3-4 6-8 3-1-1-1 90

Do A1, rest 30 seconds, do A2 rest 30 sec, do A3 rest 30 seconds, do A4 and rest 90 seconds before repeating the cycle a total of four revolutions, not including warm up sets. Advanced trainees can trim the rest periods 5 seconds per week for added fat burning impact! Email Scott@infinityfitness.com for a full version of the Giant Set Fat Burning routine Today!
The Extreme Crash Diet
Appropriately named based on its rate of progress. The ECD is something Dr. Serrano developed for people getting ready for weddings or other important events. When time is short especially the Extreme Crash Diet is a great fat loss plan. It is not uncommon for clients to see a 10-20 lb loss of body fat in just 30 days when applied correctly and consistently. ECD is a great kick start for fat loss, with spring arriving in most parts of the country this is a great option to make significant progress in a short period of time. What Our Customers Are Saying
|
| Hi John, I want to let you know that my 16 (or 17?) year old Malamute has been on your all raw meats (mostly organs plus fish and eggs) for 4 months now and he's now acting like a dog that's 3 or 4 years younger! He's actually romping again and following me on long walks, and he's 110+ in age! Before the switch to all raw I was preparing myself to put him down. He was losing his appetite more and more and really aging rapidly. I've seen a complete turn around in the last month. His biochemical pathways must be really opened up by now, which I've read is the key benefit of raw feeding. When biochemical pathways open, the body optimally functions. It's so amazing to witness the rejuvenation that has occurred in my Sitka. All my dogs and cats in fact are thriving on their raw diet and they love it! They really look forward to their meals now, and I'm seeing so many positive changes in their health since they've switched to all raw meat and no carbs of any kind. If only I had known before how much I was depriving my dogs and cats of what nature intended - a raw, carnivorous diet. Thank you so much for you pet food selection! You've certainly made my dogs and cats so much healthier and happier and I'm so thrilled. My dogs and cats will live longer thanks to you. D.S. Goodnews Bay, AK |

Terrific Top Sirloin
Marinade:
- 2 tbsp unfiltered organic extra virgin olive oil
For Sauteing:
Directions: - The day before you cook the steak, rub all surfaces with olive oil, place in a glass bowl, cover and let sit for 1 hour. Refrigerate overnight. (If cooking it the same day, marinate in oil for 2 hours at room temperature.)
- Remove it from refrigerator an hour before cooking so it can come to room temperature.
- When meat is at room temperature, heat the butter over medium heat in a cast iron frying pan. Rub the salt into both sides of the steak. When the butter is hot and slightly smoking, add the steak, and cook for 5 minutes over medium heat.
- Turn the steak over, and cook for another 5 minutes on medium heat.
- Reduce heat to low, turn steak over and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Turn the steak over, and cook for another 5 minutes on low. Test the steak for doneness. If it's rare in the middle, but warm, it will be medium rare as you move away from the middle to the sides, and medium near each surface of the steak. In other words, this steak is giong to give you several degrees of doneness. If you wish the steak to be less rare, cook it on low for another 2 to 4 minutes on each side.
The thickness of the Top Sirloin allows a variety of textures, uiciness, and states of doneness, ranging from a crisp, flavorful crust to a juicy, tender interior.

This is our way of saying thank you for purchasing in volume. This can be any combination of products totaling 40 pounds and does not have to be specific to any category. Minimum Purchase Rules |
U.S. Wellness requires a $75 minimum
purchase and a 7 pound minimum combined purchase of
beef,
lamb,
pork,
nutraceuticals,
gourmet rabbit,
grass-fed goat,
grass-fed bison,
raw cheese,
single piece poultry, and
butter.
The minimum is required since we have built the cost of shipping into the price of the product. You will only see a $7.50 handling fee at checkout.
The issue is that the 20 pound bulk chicken and turkeys originate from
separate cold storage center where those products are produced. It is not
efficient to ship one package of beef as a stand alone item when the balance of
the order originates 400 miles away.
The shopping cart will keep track and remind you if you are under the 7 pound
limit for a combination of beef, lamb, pork, raw cheese, butter, goat, shrimp,
soap and single honey bottle purchases. A
Red font will appear under the shopping
cart if you are under the minimum price or pound requirements.
