Best Snack Bars!  Fresh Steak Sale!

September 28, 2014
 Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
Fresh Steaks
Fresh steaks on sale!  If you have not tried our fresh (never frozen!) line of beef offerings, now is a great time to do so.  Our Fresh Chilled Steak & Burger Bundle is on sale this week only, and includes two 15-oz Ribeyes and six pounds of 75% lean ground beef.  This product has never been frozen and will arrive cold and fresh.

We are honored to be able to offer a premier line of snack bars here at US Wellness Meats, and just posted a new blog article with more information on this Superhero Snack Company - GoodOnYa.  All of these bars are certified organic, gluten-free, Kosher, and are non-GMO project verified.  Not to mention, they are loaded with real, whole superfoods with flavors that your whole family will love.  These also make great Halloween snacks - it's hard to believe, but Halloween is just a few short weeks away!

How does exercise make you feel?  Do you dread it and love it at the same time?  There are so many benefits of getting your exercise, and you can find the full list at Mark's Daily Apple.   Even if you only have a few minutes a day for a quick walk, a jog up the stairs instead of the elevator, or a few extra situps at the end of the day, it's worth it!

Be sure to check out our recipe section below, for a new recipe from our good friend and expert chef, Russ Crandall of The Domestic Man.  He has put a gluten-free, paleo, primal twist on the classic hot dog, which makes this recipe an easy dinner both young and old will enjoy.

The first full week of autumn has been sunny and beautiful here in Northeast Missouri.  We've been enjoying very fall-like temperatures with sunny days and chilly nights.  We hope everyone else is enjoying this calm time of year!

Fall Regards,

John, Lee Ann, Tressa, Jennifer, Amanda & Laura on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

Cancer, Heart Disease & Telomeres

By: Al Sears, MD

Here's a truth about cancer ... you don't get cancer because your aunt Mae or anyone else in your family had it.

The high rate of occurrence is indicative of how far from our natural environment we've strayed. Man-made chemicals, toxicants and pollutants, combined with the loss of nutrient protection from food, for example, make us more vulnerable.

But that also means that when you restore these natural protectors to your body, you have a good chance of avoiding cancer altogether.

Take one of my favorite natural metabolic regulators, nitric oxide. It's an important signaling molecule in your cardiovascular system. It relaxes the lining in blood vessels allowing blood to flow freely. That reduces blood pressure. It also helps prevent your arteries from stiffening up which can lead to heart disease.

But here's something I only recently discovered about nitric oxide (NO) myself. It can help maintain your telomeres. German scientists injected NO into a culture of blood cells. The NO increased the activity of telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds telomeres. It extended the life of the blood cells.(1)

The same is true in the other direction. Block NO production and telomeres get shorter.(2)

That would be a huge benefit all by itself, because longer telomeres means less chance of cancer.

But nitric oxide is a powerful anti-cancer nutrient in other ways, too.

Lab studies link nitric oxide to an increase in the programmed death of tumor cells. It also lowers rates of cancer metastasis.(3) That means cancers are less likely to spread when you have enough NO.

You see, cancer cells with high levels of nitric oxide can't metastasize...

Is Your Probiotic Harming Your Health?

By: Kelley Herring, Healing Gourmet

Probiotics have become one of the most widely-used nutritional supplements on the market. According to a recent report by Transparency Market Research, sales of probiotic ingredients, supplements and foods are estimated to reach $38 billion by 2018.

And while more and more people are turning to fermented foods and probiotics to improve digestive health, there's something important you should know: Your probiotic could actually worsen your digestive symptoms and harm your health.

Research published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that 84 percent of people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) also suffer from harmful overgrowth of a specific type of gut bacteria.

This overgrowth - called SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) - is responsible for a host of digestive and systemic health symptoms including:
  • Bloating, belching and gas
  • Cramping, constipation and diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • Rashes and skin disorders
  • Irritability, unstable moods and depression
  • Asthma
  • Joint Pain
But what causes SIBO?

The Benefits & Dangers of Supplements

From multivitamins to supplements that pledge to help with everything from depression to treating athlete's foot, whole stores are filled with these alternative medications. With so many options out there it can be difficult for patients to know what is beneficial or even where to start.

"Today more than ever it's important for patients to work with their physician or nutritionist when considering supplements. Some are beneficial but others can be dangerous, especially when it comes to interacting with other supplements or medications," said Aaron Michelfelder, MD, family and integrative medicine physician at Loyola University Health System. "In general there is no benefit from taking a supplement just for the sake of supplementing. So, talk to your doctor about what would be beneficial for you."

For instance, Michelfelder says that many people don't know that calcium supplements can interfere with thyroid absorption. If a patient is on a thyroid medicine, taking a calcium supplement at the same time could cause side effects.

"There are so many interactions that many patients aren't aware of, but if you work with your physician, you can find the best and safest combination for you based on your health history and needs," Michelfelder said. "Even if your own primary care physician isn't willing to try supplements, you should still consult a medical professional. There are many integrative and functional medicine physicians who would be happy to provide a consult."

Vitamin C is another common supplement that people may take for the wrong reasons. According Michelfelder there is no evidence that it helps ward off colds, but it does help with iron absorption and can be helpful for people who are anemic.

"There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. People shouldn't take more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C a day as it can lead to kidney problems. It's also extremely acid, making it a bad choice for someone with stomach issues," Michelfelder said. "It's hard to navigate all the products out there on your own. That is why it's important to work with a medical professional as a team."

Michelfelder has prescribed supplements to patients when there is a nutrient deficiency or if together they feel it might be beneficial.

"In general it's inexpensive and if it's not likely to cause harm I think it's great for patients to give it a try. Everyone is different, everyone's body is different. For some people it really can make a difference in their health," Michelfelder said.

He says if a person has mildly high blood pressure he might recommend trying a supplement and lifestyle change for 6 months and then evaluate if a medication is necessary.

There also are instances, such as sleep problems, when Michelfelder prefers to prescribe supplements rather than prescription medication.

"Sleep medications can be habit-forming and leave people impaired the next day. I would much prefer my patients to try melatonin or just better sleep hygiene, such as limiting screen time and increasing exercise," Michelfelder said.

Because there is little research on the effects of supplements on a fetus Michelfelder suggests pregnant women stay away from all supplements with the exception of a prenatal vitamin.

"There are not as many regulations or as much research done on supplements as there is for medications, so the most important thing is to make sure you talk to your doctor," Michelfelder said.

Peak Motivation to Burn 20 Pounds of Fat with Eye Opening Before Pictures!

By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

The summer did not go as planned and I was not successful with my goal of to lose 20 pounds of body fat stuck on my hips and mid-section. I can easily blame my husband for sabotaging me, but I am going to have to take the lead for him as well by cooking better meal options.  My arm definition needs to improve as well.  Three months from now we are going on vacation and I do not want to fear putting on a bathing suit this time around!

Michelle

Michelle,

You and your husband should take some pictures of yourself from the front, back and side in your bathing suit that you can print out to put in a few spots to see often.  Be prepared, as every time I have clients go through this procedure, the pictures are a real eye-opener, especially from the side and back since these are areas we cannot see well without the use of pictures.  You have set goals that are both specific and time sensitive with a deadline of the vacation date which is great.  Attaching strategies for achieving your goals to the goal sheet is very important and will be the subject of a future article.

Nakkikastike (Finnish Hot Dogs in Sauce)

Ingredients: Finnish Hot Dogs
  • 2 tbsp butter or ghee, divided
  • 1 pkg hot dogs of your choice, sliced
  • 1/2 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 carrot, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp brown mustard
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt, more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper, more to taste
  • 1 pinch nutmeg

Directions:
  1. In a skillet, warm 1 tbsp of the butter/ghee over med/high heat. Add the hot dogs and saute until browned, about 3 minutes. Remove the hot dogs and set aside.

  2. Turn the skillet heat down to medium, and add the other 1 tbsp of butter/ghee. Add the onion and carrot; saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and saute until aromatic, another minute, then add the mustard, tomato paste, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Reduce heat to med/low and simmer until darkened, about 20 minutes.

  3. Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth, then return to the skillet. Taste and add salt and pepper if needed. Add the hot dogs and simmer for another minute or two before serving.

** This dish traditionally is served with boiled potatoes, which can be cooked while the sauce is simmering. The bland taste of boiled potatoes perfectly pairs with the robust sauce. To do so, simply add some peeled potatoes to a pot of water, add 1/2 tsp of salt to the water, and boil over med heat until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Toss with some melted butter and garnish with fresh chopped parsley if you're up for it.
