Fatty Acids Are Essential When it comes to fatty acids, our bodies need a variety. Like most things in life, it's helpful and healthful to have the right balance. Essential fatty acids, like Omega-3 and Omega-6, are those our bodies do not produce naturally, so we have to get them from the foods we eat. Omega-9 fatty acids are actually produced by the body so they aren't considered essential to our diet. Most Americans tend to get enough of the Omega-6 and Omega-9's, but are lacking in Omega-3's. Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for healthy brain functions. They also appear to be important for heart health. Omega-3's (EPA, DHA, and ALA) play a variety of roles like reducing inflammation, improving blood pressure, lowering triglyceride levels, and slowing the progression of Alzheimer's just to name a few. If most American's are short on Omega-3's, what can we do about it? Since these come from our diets, it's important to choose foods that have a good balance or are particularly high in Omega-3 levels. It tends to be more difficult for the body to process Omega-3's from plant sources, so some other alternatives are: Alaskan Wild-Caught Salmon, Grass-fed Beef and Bison, Mackerel, Cod, Tuna, and Grass-fed Lamb. Most studies show grass-fed, grass-finished beef has between 2-5 times more Omega-3's than conventional grain-fed beef with a good balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. There's more good news about grass-fed beef; it contains 2-3 times more CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) than grain-fed. Ruminant animals have digestive systems that are made for eating and processing grass. A grain-based diet for cattle changes the pH levels so they are not able to produce as much healthy CLA.
