All Fats Are Not Created Equally!
Did you know that some vegetable oils like cottonseed oil began as a waste product? Unbeknownst to most consumers back in the late 1800s, cottonseed oil was blended into other cooking fats like lards and olive oils to make them cheaper and more profitable. One big corporation saw even more opportunity by promoting a new semi-solid cooking product with a name similar to its makeup, "crystallized cottonseed oil.” Does that ring any bells? They promoted their new development as a better, less expensive replacement for lard, tallow, and butter. By 1916, this original factory-made vegetable oil was celebrating sales of 60 million pounds.
Heart disease or cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. The foods we eat can nourish us or in the worst case, cause harm. It wasn't until nearly 80 years after the introduction of hydrogenated vegetable oils that science began questioning their impact on the health of Americans. While many still use vegetable oils for cooking, others are returning to animal fats for the nutritional benefits and flavor. In this week's article, Dr. Mercola examines the effects of artificial trans fats on our health and wellbeing.
