Saint Patrick's Day History Nuggets
St. Patrick's Day is coming up and with it an opportunity to celebrate Irish heritage and some of the traditions that evolved over the years here in America. Over the next couple of weeks we'll share some of these historical nuggets with our readers. March 17th marks the traditional death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. According to History.com, he was born toward the mid to end of the 4th century, but others say it's not so easy to pin down. Saint Patrick grew up in England, but as a young man, he was taken captive by a band of raiders from Ireland. They took him back to Ireland and sold him into slavery. He was able to escape his captivity and made his way back home. Later in life, as a Christian missionary, he decided to return to Ireland. You may know about the potato blight in Ireland during the mid-1800's that brought approximately two million Irish to America. What you might not know is that number represented nearly a quarter of the entire population of Ireland. Today, America actually has more self-identified people of Irish heritage (approximately 36 million) than the entire island of Ireland (population = approximately 7 million).
One of the great things about St. Patrick's day is the food! If green beer isn't your thing, maybe a traditional brisket, beef or lamb stew, sausage, shepherd's pie, or corned beef is something you look forward to every year. Add some cabbage and taters and you have something truly Irish! No need to wait for March 17 for something this good, but it's another reason to make sure you have it ready for a traditional St. Paddy's Day feast.
Know Your Food | Does Grass-Fed Really Matter?
While technically all cattle are grass-fed at some point in their lives, the difference sets in after weaning when they are either fed a grain inclusive diet (grain-fed and finished) or continue to eat strictly grass (grass-fed and finished). It is from here, grass-fed cattle and grain-fed cattle embark on a very different journey. US Wellness cattle spend their time grazing wide open spaces with plenty of green grass and sunshine. They are not cooped up in cramped feed lots. Our cattle are stress free with lots of healthy native grasses to munch. Does grass-fed really make a difference? KEEP READING...

"I actually talked to a local butcher about the differences between grass-fed/finished vs. grain-fed/finished meats one quiet day shortly after I started purchasing more meat that wasn’t whatever was on sale at the grocery store. I also learned a lot about grass-fed meat when I was in New Zealand for a work trip in 2019 – some of the tastiest meat I’ve ever enjoyed!" ~ Brianna Ascher
