Dirt Work
If you've followed these newsletters or watched our farm videos, you'll know how important healthy soils are to the planet and to the food we eat. Why is it so important? Nearly every food relies on soils for nutritional content — from fruits and veggies, to the grazing animals we raise on our farms. All rely on soil composition and the biology below ground. Healthier soils will have a larger, more diverse population of microorganisms. In fact, scientists estimate that there are more organisms in a tablespoon of healthy soil than there are people on earth. These organisms produce vital nutrients that are sucked back up into the plants that are eaten by people or animals. The animals we raise are fortunate to have some of the healthiest soils available. As meat eaters, we also benefit from the animal's diet. Ultimately, our animals eat right so you can too!
Besides the nutritional benefits of food, grasslands are known to support the process of carbon sequestration, as much or more so even than trees. Carbon sequestration is when atmospheric carbon (carbon dioxide) is captured and recycled by plants and organisms in the soil as organic matter. Managed grazing plays an important role in the process too. Grazing animals will eat a portion of the plants, trample some underfoot as compost, and also leave behind natural fertilizer. Our farmers rotate pastures so the land also has a chance to rest and restore. Healthy soils produce deep rooted plants that pull carbon deeper into the soil for microorganisms to use. These soils also reduce erosion and runoff by capturing and holding moisture far better than compacted, unhealthy soils. The good news is that soils can heal over time with proper holistic management.
Product Feature | Low-Histamine Meat & Fish: A Complete Guide
A low-histamine diet is an attempt to reduce exposure to histamines, a prominent chemical (specifically a biogenic amine) that affects our digestive and immune systems. Most people’s bodies have defenses that rapidly detoxify histamines, but around 1% of the population has histamine intolerance (HIT), which means their bodies aren’t as good at detoxifying these particular chemicals. Read all about Histamines on our Discover Blog.
