Build Up Winter Defense
It’s always the best time to build your gut health and winter defenses. Winters can be extremely rough on the body. It's not just the inclement weather many of us deal with - cold, freezing rain, snow - but also the season's cold and flu bugs that will soon rear their ugly heads. Every season brings a new unfriendly round of sickness. Some can be downright nasty.
The biggest and best defense is our immune system. A healthy immune system gives the body a powerful "strategic defense initiative,” to borrow a phrase from the 80s. How do we improve our defenses? Focus on a nutrient-dense whole foods diet, get plenty of rest, and enjoy some fall sunshine with an extra helping of exercise. The vitamin D your body produces (from exposure to sunshine) is essential. Consider adding prebiotic and probiotic foods to your diet. Prebiotics are foods that feed the good bacteria in the gut. These foods typically contain dietary fibers. For example, garlic, onions, asparagus, apples, and unripe bananas provide food for the good little critters in the gut. Probiotic foods provide a boost of beneficial bacteria for improved balance in the gut.
Selecting foods raised from good-quality soil is imperative to the quality of probiotics available. This is why US Wellness Farms does not use herbicides, pesticides, GMOs, or antibiotics on our farms. These substances can hinder the development of natural probiotics. We want our soils to have life in them. Generally speaking, you'll be looking to add foods like kefir, raw cheeses, apple cider vinegar, yogurt, and other fermented foods. Organic is generally the cleanest option here. Add some all-natural grass-fed or pastured bone broth to your diet and take advantage of the healing properties broth offers for the digestive system. Take a few precautions and give yourself the best opportunity to stay healthy this winter.
