Aging Gracefully
We would all like to have good health into our later years. Hopes can be tempered though when a chronic illness or unexpected injury occurs. While some of tomorrow's health and wellness may be given to chance, a fair amount is a product of the decisions we make today. As we age, many people notice some similar changes - gray hair, wrinkles, loss of muscle mass, hearing loss, weakening bones, memory loss, etc. These are just a few of the things that come with aging. Is there a way to mitigate the effects of aging? You'll be pleased to know that there are some things you can do today to help your future self.
Imagine a vehicle that has been driven for 50+ years. A well-maintained vehicle that has run on good quality fuel, clean oil, and avoided accidents should continue to perform at a reasonably good level. It may still have a few areas of concern. Maybe a little rust is starting to show, or a rattle or squeak may turn up. That vehicle can still run for a long time if it continues to have the proper amount of attention. There are farm tractors over 70 years old that are still reliable and working hard. If a vehicle has been ignored, run hard or not run much at all, and poorly maintained with bad fuel and dirty oil, it will be more likely to break down. Our bodies are far more complex than a car, truck, or tractor so we should be even more attentive. The most common advice for aging gracefully seems to be based on the same things we talk about here regularly. 1. Good Nutrition - eat healthy whole foods and limit the junk. Run your body and mind on premium fuel for proper nourishment. 2. Rest & Relax - get the sleep you need and minimize stress. 3. Exercise - movement keeps the muscles and joints healthy and helps reduce stress.
