Springtime!
Officially, springtime is only a few short hours away. Throughout the country, browns are turning green as trees, plants, and grasses come back to life and warm the landscape. Following winter storms, cold weather, snow and ice, the anticipation of spring is almost palpable for people and animals. Green spring grasses are the delight of ruminants like cattle. This is one area where land management is vital to healthy plants and animals.
In deep well-managed soils, plant roots grow deep into the soil to pull nutrients from below. Even in the winter months, soil organisms are working 24/7 to recycle organic matter into energy. When grasses begin to green up in spring, a healthy soil composition makes all the difference in providing for the nutrient needs of cattle. The process of developing deep, rich soils relies on several factors: 1. Rotational grazing and rested periods 2. Grazing cattle - large ruminants trample and help bury organic materials like plants and manure that encourages composting 3. Plentiful life below the surface that makes food for plants 4. Sunshine and rain.
With the right land management, even deserts can be reclaimed but it takes a lot of work. This is why our farms have adopted holistic principles to ensure there is life abundant in the soils. Our animals are raised with NO added hormones, NO antibiotics, NO pesticides, and NO herbicides.
