Classic Restorations
We've all seen older classic cars — muscle cars from the 1960's and '70's, and vintage automobiles from the early 20th century. In their day, these vehicles were the peak of innovation. They were designed for utility and enjoyment. Many are still around today because they've been loved and meticulously maintained. They've been washed, waxed, and restored. Oil and fluids have been changed regularly. Batteries, belts and seals have been replaced on a schedule. Some have been sanded down and re-painted. Parts have been fixed or replaced as they wear out. The classic cars that have survived have been treated with a great deal of care. A machine that's well-maintained can age very well. It's not just cars and trucks though. Farm tractors, refrigerators, sewing machines, etc are all examples of machines that last a long time if they are cared for properly. Of course, we've also all seen examples of machines that have been abused and neglected.
The human machine is much like the previous examples. As we age our bodies naturally begin to wear down from use. Unfortunately, it's one of the facts of life. That doesn't mean we can't take steps to age more gracefully. Just like classic cars that are still in showroom condition, there are a few key factors that go into maintaining a body to operate at peak performance. An aging human body needs specific nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats to keep us from getting rusty and breaking down. Older adults need more protein in their diets to help rebuild muscle and maintain strength. Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, certain B-vitamins, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, and potassium are all more important as we age. These nutrients help maintain, rebuild, lubricate, and essentially help us remain healthy. Many of these important nutrients are found in abundance in grass-fed, pasture-raised meats and wild-caught seafood.
One more key to mention. Exercise is vitally important to an aging body, so don't fix it up and keep it in the showroom. Take it out for a spin every so often. You'll find that routine activity and good nutrition makes all the difference in keeping a body young.
All the Best, Team USWM
