Breakfast Around the World
Are you more sweet or savory? If given the choice, would you prefer a plate of pancakes smothered in maple syrup or would you choose bacon and eggs, biscuits and gravy, or avocado and cheese on sour dough? These are all items you might find on a typical restaurant breakfast menu. It also depends on what country you find yourself. In England, a traditional breakfast often includes sausage, eggs, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast. In Australia, you could expect much of the same with avocados and vegemite on the menu as well. In Asian countries, steamed rice is on the menu along with fish, miso soup, and possibly seaweed. Over in France, they tend to enjoy a sweeter breakfast with an emphasis on bread and pastries, jam, butter, and juice. In the U.S., a traditional breakfast can cover the whole spectrum between sweet and savory with sausage, bacon, toast, biscuits, potatoes, eggs, pancakes or waffles, pastries, bagels, muffins, juices, coffee, fruit and vegetable smoothies, and of course doughnuts. We do our breakfasts big here.
Opinions about breakfast are wide ranging, from those who prefer to skip or fast to those who make it their king size meal. Some fall in between and enjoy a quick pemmican energy boost in the morning. While the term "breakfast" appears to have been coined in the mid-1400's, the act of "breaking a fast" has been around since man. Throughout time, some have had their first meal of the day early, and others wait till later in the day. There's always been some disagreement about which is better. Since every body is unique, we'll leave that up to you.
