Add Some Spice to Mealtimes
It's time to add some spice to your menu! January is a great month to make some amendments to the weekly meal plan. If you don't already have a written list of favorite or regular weekly meals, take a moment to jot out a plan. Start with the regulars you tend to have every week. Do you have a Taco Tuesday or a Salad Sunday? If you haven't used a weekly meal plan, you won't believe how much it helps with organization, shopping, and nutritional planning. It offers an opportunity to follow a more intentional nutritional guideline and see what you may be missing. Balance is an important part of any healthy diet. Are there any trends you notice? Is the menu heavy on certain dishes or lacking variety in proteins or veggies?
We recommend adding a new recipe or two to the week. Here are a few helpful tips to get started: 1. Are there any regions or cultural areas you're missing on the current menu...American, Asian, Italian, European, Latin American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, etc.? A quick search online will provide several options to consider. Choose one or two that sound enticing. 2. Look at the ingredient list for each recipe and see how you can clean that up with organic and all-natural, sustainable choices to swap out. This is a great way to turn traditional favorites into HEALTHIER favorites that not only taste good, but are better nutritionally. 3. Let each person in the family choose a recipe to try. This can be a good way to involve everyone in the meal planning activity. Print out a list of recipes and let them choose which one they want to add to the menu. If it doesn't work out, try another one. Ultimately, you'll find one or two new recipes that everyone loves AND you'll be adding a little more spice to the weekly menu in the process.
