What is one thing you could do right now to improve your health for the present and future? One very reasonable and potentially life altering change is to limit or eliminate added sugars and sweeteners from your diet. You might say, "well, I don't eat much sugar". Are you sure about that? If you eat processed foods of any kind, you might be surprised at the amount of sugar added. Drinks, snacks, sauces, breads, and cereals are notorious for added sugars and sweeteners. The amount of added sugar or sugar substitutes can be staggering. You should also know that sugar can be called by many names - sucrose, dextrose, syrup, dextrine, maltose, maltodextrine, lactose, glucose and those are just a few. There are over 75 different names for sugar and that's not counting the number of artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, etc. That's a lot of sneaky sweeteners being added to food. Just one 20 oz soda can have nearly 3 times the daily recommended allowance of sugar.
Too much sugar in your diet can lead to all sorts of trouble - obesity, cancer, type-2 diabetes, acne, depression, heart disease, autoimmune disease, kidney and liver disease and the list goes on. You might notice this list overlaps with the list of deadly diseases millions of Americans battle.
Take heart! Nature has given us another way to enjoy sweet treats. When you crave something sweet, have an apple, carrot, peach, banana, tomato, or blueberries. Remember to avoid the sugar in meat too. Choose bacon and sausages with no sugar added.
