What is Regenerative Agriculture?
What do we mean when we use the term regenerative agriculture? It's an important question because it defines what we do and why. It explains why we're different than commercial food companies that rely on getting as much product to market, as quickly and cheaply as possible.
So, let's dive in. For those who don't know, US Wellness/Grassland Beef is owned and operated by the farmers who raise the food we offer in our online store. They are on the farms every day. It's where they live. Regenerative agriculture involves replenishing resources and doing the things that encourage thriving ecosystems above and below ground. It's a sustainable process because it continues to add to instead of just taking from nature. Studies are showing that herds of grazing animals like bison and cattle actually play a huge role in cleaning the atmosphere through carbon sequestration (pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and sinking it into the ground). Imagine a giant vacuum cleaner sucking up atmospheric carbon. That carbon, collected by grasslands, is then transferred deep into the soil by heavy grazing animals as they forage. It's a process, similar to composting, that allows our farms to continue to replenish, and not only maintain, but improve soil health and underground ecosystems. By encouraging life above ground and below ground, consumers benefit from more nutrient dense foods, the planet benefits, ecosystems benefit, and future generations — our children and grandchildren — benefit! It's win-win! We consider this to be a responsible way to use the resources we have and an ethical way to do business.
Unfortunately, this tends to be at odds with modern commercial agriculture theory that promotes the use of chemical fertilizers, GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, etc. All of these things actually harm life to some degree. Years and years of continued use results in dead soil, and polluted air and water. If there's little or no life in the soil, there's no nutrition.
US Wellness farms use the principles of regenerative agriculture to work WITH nature, not against it. We don't use antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, GMOs, fillers, dyes, preservatives, or fake additives of any sort. Managed grazing, with rest periods, allows us to mimic the way bison herds would continually move from area to area. When you fill your freezer with food raised on our farms, you're getting honest to goodness ALL-NATURAL, nutritious and delicious food. It's as close to nature as you can get outside of hunting and fishing for food on your own.
All the Best, Team USWM
