Spring Traditions
Easter is celebrated by people all over the world. Traditions abound depending on where you are. Some will hunt for colorful eggs, while others will wear a spiffy new set of clothes or a bonnet to church. Children in some countries will get a basketful of candy, and others will dress up in colorful costumes. Some countries even throw water on each other in a tradition known as "Wet Monday or Sprinkling". Wherever you are, most celebrate a holiday by gathering together. That's the one tradition that seems to extend beyond borders. Families come together to break bread and enjoy fellowship. Some of the more traditional main courses for Easter include Rack of Lamb, Leg of Lamb, Ham, Pork Loin, and Standing Rib Roasts. The savory aroma of roasts, fresh dinner rolls, and pies cooking in the oven bring back fond memories for many of us.
This weekend also marks the beginning of another tradition. Thursday 3/28 was Opening Day for baseball, making this the first weekend of baseball for the 2024 season. Baseball is known as America's pastime, but its origin story is a bit complicated. There is some dispute as to when and who came up with the idea for baseball. While Abner Doubleday was credited for years as the inventor, it's now thought that a volunteer firefighter, Alexander Cartwright modified two English games to come up with what we know as Baseball. According to History.com, the first official game was played in New York against a team of cricket players. Many of us who grew up playing baseball on corner lots with crude bats and balls still look forward to this time of year as it takes us back to simpler times. Wondering what all the fuss is about over a game? Check out the 1993 classic movie, The Sandlot.
All the Best, Team USWM
