Happy Labor Day!
September has officially arrived and with it the first tastes of fall. Fall grilling is a must. Whether you have a grill or smoker, the weekends are made for grilling delicious grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. One of our favorites for the grill is Kabobs. Kabobs are so versatile. Choose your meat, choose your veggies and / or fruit, and grill. The cube sized chunks of meat cook faster so it's done before you know it. Feeling adventurous? Try some variety. Alternate Beef and Pork on the skewer, or some succulent lamb or chicken. Include red, yellow, or green peppers, onions, zucchini, summer squash, and mushrooms. Oh, and don't forget pineapple for a little kick of sweetness. Not only are Kabobs tasty, but they are colorful too. Literally just a few minutes on the grill and you're ready to enjoy a gourmet meal.
One of the happiest memories of autumn is apple picking. While a few varieties are ready in August, the majority of apple varieties ripen in September and October. If you're fortunate to find an organic orchard close by, it's definitely worth checking out. Organic orchards don't use harsh chemical pesticides on the trees to keep pests at bay, and they tend to understand the benefits of regenerative agriculture and the power of soil microbes. There's nothing quite like fresh pressed apple cider. If you're looking for a little adventure, try preparing a homemade batch of hard apple cider or apple wine. It doesn't take a PhD in Chemistry to make a batch of extremely tasty cider — just a little reading, some special homebrew yeast, a glass jug and a few other things you likely already have in your kitchen. You may be surprised how easy it is to make your own.
Fall is also when colors start to change, temperatures begin to dip, and outdoor activities become so much more enjoyable. Now is the time to get into some good routines. Consider starting a new walking regimen this fall. The exercise can add years to your life along with more restful sleep, improved cardiovascular fitness, and a boost in immune function just to name a few. The heat of summer has nearly run its course, so the outdoors is more inviting. It's calling your name...can you hear it?
All the Best, Team USWM
